The Manufacturing Process

1. Raw Material Melting: Sand, soda ash, and limestone are melted in a furnace at ~1700°C.

2. Forming: The molten glass is shaped using one of two primary methods:

   • Blow-and-Blow: Used for narrow-neck bottles (e.g., beer, soda). The glass is blown into a mold to create the parison (a preliminary shape), then transferred to a second mold for the final blow.

   • Press-and-Blow: Used for wide-mouth jars. The glass is pressed into the mold to form the parison, then blown into the final shape. This allows for more precise control over the glass distribution.

3. Annealing: The newly formed bottles are slowly cooled in a lehr (a temperature-controlled oven) to relieve internal stresses and strengthen the glass.

4. Inspection & Coating: Bottles are inspected for defects. They often receive a surface coating (a "hot-end" and "cold-end" coat) to increase lubricity and prevent scratches.
